On Time At Hawthorn Cottage

by John Hayden
ON TIME AT HAWTHORN COTTAGE + brown frame

“On Time at Hawthorn Lane”

Hawthorn Lane is near Christchurch where I live and the original painting was purchased by the charming lady who had lived in the white cottage , “Hawthorn Cottage”, for many years. She remembered with affection the years of steam and the Southern Railway.  She knew exactly when all the trains were due and used to check her grandfather clock when they passed. They were always on time in the good old days she said!

Road And Rail

by John Hayden
ROAD AND RAIL 1.9.10

The original painting was a commission for a client who wished to portray an un-rebuilt “Merchant Navy” locomotive in 1947 Southern Railway livery, and also to include in the painting his beloved 1960 MG car. As the loco had been de-streamlined by the time his car was built, this involved a degree of artistic licence with time!  But although this scene could never have happened in real life he was very pleased with his oil painting, and it has proved to be a popular print.

    Basingstoke Shed

    by John Hayden
    BASINGSTOKE SHED

Basingstoke was always a busy shed in steam days being situated on the Southern Region main line from Waterloo near the point where the Southampton and Bournemouth line diverged from the West of England line via Salisbury and Exeter.

The print shows a Standard 4 tank locomotive with a Bullied Pacific alongside.
